What is a Newborn Care Specialist?

A Newborn Care Specialist, or NCS, is a care professional with a skill set and specialized training to provide care for newborns and infants. They guide and educate parents and other caregivers in the household though any basic or tough issues that arise, all while easing their concerns.

Typically an NCS works with a family for 3-4 months, but some families choose to keep them around longer – even up to 12 months! Near the end of their time together, an NCS can help the family transition into utilizing a nanny by assisting in the hiring process.

An NCS is trained in a variety of things pertaining to newborns: diaper changes, swaddling techniques, umbilical cord care, circumcision care, preemie care, breastfeeding issues, bottle feeding issues, and treating common ailments (such as gas and reflux).

One of the greatest benefits of working with an NCS is their overnight care. They establish the baby’s sleep routine/schedule so they sleep through the night. Usually, the NCS will rest in the nursery at night (or in a bedroom close by) to monitor the baby. This means YOU will get some well-deserved rest while knowing your new bundle of joy is well taken care of.
